I’ve been with online banks since I was 19 (like President’s Choice (PC) Financial or Tangerine in Canada). I basically hate paying bank fees, don’t like leaving money as a balance in there just to waive the fees (sometimes I use more than I need and I don’t want to think about that) and have run the gamut in learning how to handle online banking.

Last updated: March 22, 2019 As a Simplii Financial customer for almost 17 years now, I've been taking advantage of pretty much since it first became available in Canada.
I've enjoyed no monthly account fees and unlimited free cheques for that entire time along with earning much higher interest rates on savings than what is offered by the big Canadian banks.
All the while there has been another no-fee banking competitor out there: ING Direct.
I'd always known about them, but their value proposition was never great enough for me.
However, they were acquired by Scotiabank in 2012, changed their name to Tangerine, and upped their value proposition just enough that I took the plunge and opened my first account in 2014.
Tangerine currently has a similar offer open to new clients: 2.
You can set up a free EFT link between Tangerine and your existing chequing accounts at any bank if you want to keep using your existing chequing account.
Open A Tangerine Account: Use This Orange Key: Orange50 Once you have an active account, you can then refer your friends, family, and acquaintances for additional bonuses using your own orange key.
Simplii Financial formerly PC Financial I have to admit the sign-up bonuses and interest rate promotions didn't hurt, but Tangerine has some other advantages and disadvantages over Simplii Financial.
Access to Scotiabank ATMs Tangerine has access to the entire network of Scotiabank ATMs.
While Simplii Financial uses the CIBC ATMs.
Free email money transfers Tangerine has their own system for transferring money by email.
They developed this system for sending money by email years ago, long before most of the big banks started offering Interac transfers for free.
In November 2017, Simplii Financial announced that they would no longer be charging fees for Interac transfers, which now gives them a slight edge over Tangerine.
Cheque deposits by picture I'm a busy guy and I really hate going into the branch, hence my love for virtual banking.
I also hate going to the ATM if I can avoid it.
However, I still receive a decent number of cheques which forces me to visit either the branch or an ATM now and then.
Related: Tangerine offers mobile cheque deposits simply by snapping a picture of the cheque using their mobile app deposit bank draft tangerine your smartphone.
What a time saver!
Now I can just snap a picture anytime and anywhere and the money will quickly show up in my account.
Tangerine was one of the first banks in Canada to offer this feature and other banks have been scrambling to catch up.
Most of them have it now, including Simplii Financial so it is no longer an exclusive advantage to them, but it's good to know the feature is there.
Competitive interest rates There are smaller banks and credit unions out there that offer higher interest rates than both Tangerine and Simplii Financial, but their service typically isn't as convenient.
Tangerine's rates are typically as good as or better than Simplii Financial.
A few years ago, the big banks didn't come anywhere close on savings account rates but they were eventually forced to stop bleeding people completely dry when they started losing customers in droves to virtual banks due to their much higher interest rates.
As of March 2019, both Simplii and Tangerine have the same core rate: 1.
Good mobile app I'm starting to bank on my phone more and more often.
Both Tangerine and Simplii Financial have a good mobile apps so it's pretty much a tie on that front.
Easy account opening It's super easy to open an account with Tangerine.
I hate going into a branch to sign up for an account and Tangerine has definitely made ease of account opening a priority.
PC Financial used to require you to go into their Pavilion to open a brand new account or wait up to 3 weeks with lots of different steps to get the account approved and opened entirely virtually.
Now that Simplii Financial has launched, hopefully that process has improved.
Related: With Tangerine, all you have to do is fill out a simple form online and then use the mobile cheque deposit to make your first deposit from another Canadian financial institution and your account is up and running within a day or two.
It actually shocked me how easy it was.
I was very pleasantly surprised!
Instant transfers between Tangerine accounts One annoying feature of Simplii Financial Interest Plus Savings accounts is that transfers out of your savings to your chequing account aren't instant and require one business day to process.
Sometimes you just need access to your money NOW, am I right?
With Tangerine, transfers between savings and chequing accounts are instant.
Cheques aren't always free The biggest disadvantage Tangerine has over Simplii Financial is that only the first book of cheques is free whereas they are always free with the latter.
All else is basically equal Everything else is basically the same between the two virtual banks as I outlined in my.
You can check it out if you want to know what else to expect.
My experience so far My experience with Tangerine started off really well with quick account opening process that just blew my socks off because opening accounts is usually such a slow process when done online.
From there I was immediately impressed with the mobile cheque cashing process and the fact that they used it as part of the account opening process.
The free email transfers were also really great, but less so now that most banks are giving Interac transfers away for free.
The mobile app has been a real time saver.
I think I actually like the Simplii Financial mobile app layout slightly better, but I really like the full disclosure they give in the Tangerine app.
They make sure you are aware of any security risks and they provide a very secure process for logging in.
The link created between my Simplii account and my savings account with Tangerine has been very useful as well.
I love that a link is automatically created between the two accounts when you open a new account and you can then transfer funds back and forth between those accounts with a couple of clicks.
If things continue on this way, I'll probably stick with them for quite some time but I'll definitely keep my Simplii Financial accounts open just in case I want to switch back or a good interest rate promotion comes along.
Update: I've now been with Tangerine for about 4 years and I couldn't be happier.
I ended up using the account mostly for business transactions for a while so I could keep them separate from my personal transactions.
Now I use it mostly to take advantage of higher interest rates on my savings by opting into their regular interest rate promotions.
We're letting you know because it's the right thing to do.

Updated the article to reflect this.
Please keep in mind that some of the older comments - especially the ones discussing specific promotions - may be out of date.
All the information in the main article is current though.
It was better eight years ago than it is now.
I can't seem to get a straight answer from Tangerine whether or not it is still necessary to keep an external account with one of the big five banks.
Tangerine, as you've mentioned has chequing accounts now, and just today I ordered my credit card.
Its MasterCard instead of Visa, so I will have to see how that goes.
Once the card arrives I'd like to close out my 41 year affiliation with the Royal Bank and just go exclusively with Tangerine.
Remember the old TV ads?
There are different rates for different account balances.
I think though, that since the takeover by Scotiabank, we will see more and more fees creep in - especially as new services are offered.
I think that was the whole idea behind the big bank buying the little bank - to slowly wrap it up and get back to gouging customers for every transaction they make.
I don't see why you would need to keep an account with RBC at all.
Can you not open a Tangerine account without having another chequing account already - I haven't actually looked deposit bank draft tangerine that.
As you said in the article, you can instantly transfer money from your savings to bring your chequing out of overdraft in Tangerine, something you can't do in Simplii this is honestly the biggest reason I don't totally switch click the following article Simplii, why does it take a day??
A couple quick comments or complaints about Tangerine's service: 1 There is no ability to send an international wire transfer 2 For USD-saving accounts, it isn't possible to deposit physical cash into your account.
You can only transfer US-dollars in from another bank that is linked So for some us it isn't possible to go virtual completely.
These are two things that I don't see myself needing to do very often but I do maintain two no-fee accounts with RBC for whenever I need a real bank.
I have a US dollar savings account with them as well as a no-frills Canadian chequing account which I never use.
The other deposit bank draft tangerine some sort of savings or chequing account that I rarely use.
If I use it, the fees start to pile on quick, but if you do minimal or electronic transactions, then there are no fees.
Can't really remember the details because I just avoid using it.
However, I was surprised it remained with no monthly fee after they announced rate hikes.
By any chance from your knowledge, have they changed this?
Thanks and have a good one!
Now, it appears that they don't allow wire transfers of any sort.
You may want to call them to confirm this because I wasn't able to find any reference to this restriction on their site.
PC ATMs are convenient access for me CIBC machines and I have very few cheques to ever deal with.
I am only working on my deposit bank draft tangerine book of cheques, so reorder cost is minor issue.
I live near a border city so the US account would be nice.
I have asked PC about it and they say they are not going to offer it because it is only the limited number of border cities that have any demand for it.
For US I use CIBC as a savings account for now, 0.
But the sign up bonuses, interest rate promotions, cheque image cashing and ATMs really close to me was enough.
This means no sur charges even using a Bank of America ATM.
Tangerine also offers a above average USD exchange rate.
While they do not offer USD chequing they do offer USD saving which probably has better rate than CIBC.
When ever I send money between accounts at Tangerine it always gives me the option to send in USD if the account supports this.
This gives me Tangerine amazing exchange rate.
Definitely great to get better rates at Tangerine!
I have overdraft with PC which is reasonably priced, but the fact that Tangerine offers it free is really great.
The debit card worldwide with no fee is really nice too.
You must have to pay the fee to the foreign bank though still right?
I would assume only Tangerine's portion of the fee would be free and you'd have to still pay the foreign bank.
Definitely a money-losing proposition for them if they do!
All I see on Tangerine's site, is that it's free to use ABMs as long as it's a Read article or part of the Exchange Network which I think only exists in Canada?
I can't see where it says ABM fees are free in other parts of the world.
Once exchange goes away later this year, there will be fewer options.
Most banks RBC for sure and credit cards have a 2.
However, today I am annoyed that they don't do international wire transfers.
It drops back down to 1.
However since all my savings was already in PC when the promotion started, that 2.
But by opening a new Tangerine savings account, I can move my entire savings over to Tangerine from PC and earn that 2.
I figure, the next time PC holds a 2.
I have a post scheduled to be published on Tuesday next week that basically describes word what you've said here exactly only with a few more words and details.
I am going to be executing this very same strategy.
It only says that the bonus will be credited within 30 days.
I got my bonus within a couple of days.
I take that to mean that you are fine to withdraw the funds as soon as you receive your bonus if you have another place you want them to be.
I plan to open a chequing account too, but disappointed in the lower bonus though how to complain much about free money!
Does anyone have experience ordering a Bank draft or money order with Tangerine?
It was a slow process.
You order it online and then choose to either get it couriered to you or pick it up at a Tangerine Cafe.
Both options take at least 2 to 3 business days.
The only way to get your bank draft faster is if you happen to live in Toronto and can pick it up at their head office in North York.
Bank draft has been one of the only things that makes virtual banking a little less convenient than a bricks and mortar bank.
Fortunately, planning big purchases ahead of time is usually the norm so with a little planning it doesn't end up being a big issue.
Please tell me step by step.
This is called a "void cheque".
You then take this void cheque to your payroll department and tell them you want to have your pay deposited into this new account.
Relatively simple and painless for most people.
Go to the "Switch to Tangerine Chequing" area of online banking.
You can read your info off of this to submit to CRA My Account etcemail it to an employer, print it out and hand it to an employer, etc.
Where I've highlighted on the cheque that's missing my account number that I've removed, you'll see your account number.
With Tangerine you can ONLY have a savings account if you want.
In that case, the only place you could transfer the money would be to an account at another financial institution.
This is directly supported via their web interface and there is no fee for doing so.
Sadly, I was unaware you needed to write a cheque out to yourself in order to open an account the flyer that came in the mail had no such mention.
So I have already closed my bank account at BMO, which they said I 'wasn't allowed to do' but I finally was able to close it, so I doubt they will temporarily re-open it so I can write myself a cheque.
Anything I did, had a fee.
I'll either sign up to PC or RBC I guess.
I know PC is pretty much free, but there was a couple things with them I wasn't too sure about.
It doesn't have to be a cheque written by you, just a cheque made out to you.
They recommend simply writing a cheque to yourself because that way you have a lot of control over how much money you want to start off your account with, for example to take advantage of the bonus offers.
If you can't find someone in person to write a cheque out to you, you could also use other cheques like a pay cheque or cheque from the government.
If you can't get any cheque at all, then yes you'll likely have to go back and open a non-Tangerine bank account just to get this process going.
If you visit a Pavilion location they can hook you up same day.
I've never had to wait to open an account with PC.
I think I posted too soon and misunderstood the way their account setup works.
I've been with them for a really long time and have had no trouble with them.
If you absolutely need a teller for some reason rather frequently, then they may not fit the bill, but otherwise they are perfect.
It's actually a good strategy because you can then move money back slots monkey in the bank forth between the two to.
The conditions look pretty similar to the tangerine deal too; chequings, savings with 250, and direct deposit.
You could take advantage of them both if you get some sort of secondary direct deposit maybe pension, or tax credit.
Not sure if it was in direct response to the Tangerine promotion or they had it planned all along.
I think the tangerine offer is structured a little simpler and easier but if you want to take advantage of like I also wrote about, then you'd be well served to have both accounts.
I called Tangerine deposit bank draft tangerine they said not on their end but it would depend on the other banks policy.
Any help would be appreciated!
This would be referring to an electronic funds transfer between my accounts, not and EMT to someone else.
I've done EMTs between PC and RBC before with no charge.
You should be good to go.
If you have a transaction limit, it may count as a transaction towards that limit.
It does however count as 1 transaction with your "regular" bank.
Do note that interbank transfer even if it's from Scotiabank to Tangerine and vice versa, it will take up to 2 business days for the transaction to complete.
However, transferring funds from one Tangerine account to deposit order in bank Tangerine account is instant.
Can he open an account depositing that?
Do atm cards chq come Iail automatically?
However, I would call them if you want to confirm for 100%.
I'm pretty sure you need an account at another financial institution where you can write a cheque to get this to work.
There was some confusion in the comments above, but I believe it was settled on actually needing an account where you can write a cheque to yourself for the first deposit.
Double check with another Tangerine agent to ensure that they're saying the same thing.
That alone isn't proof in itself that the deposit has to be made right away in one lump sum.
However, with the CSR confirming that it needs to be in 5-7 business days, it looks like that it definitely needs to be done soon after the account is open.
I tried to order cheques but they said there was an error, and I need to get the form signed first.
Can I just deposit more money instead of going to a professional to get this form signed.
I guess they want to verify who you are before they do business with you.
You should give them a call to clarify things.
ING Direct Tangerine cards, I believe use Cirrus, so you can withdrawal cash when travelling outside of canada.
Not sure all the details, but they list a charge for doing so on their site so it must be possible.
I think it is cheaper to do with Tangerine though as someone else mentioned in the comments.
Also, the bonuses for opening an account existed a long time ago, way before Tangerine.
If it was better, it wouldn't have been much better I don't think so Click believe this was one of the best opportunities to date.
Some may remember the Canadian and US currency IBG ATMs that were once at Canadian Tore stores?
I recently switched my payroll deposit to them.
I have a US acct also and transfer funds to.
I use XE Trade.
I purchase US dollars from my Canadian acct and transfer the trade into my US acct.
The only issue I am having with Tangerine is the time for funds transfers.
With my previous payroll deposit, a deposit was made shortly after midnight.
With Tangerine it inexplicably is not until 8 am.
Also with my last bank, a Monday payroll actually deposited on Saturday.
On that same note I am now waiting for an EFT inbound.
The deposit was sent yesterday at 4 am now 27 hours later and no funds yet.
This is an aspect that I am still grappling with - as timing to receive funds is very important to me.
For the late morning payroll deposits alone I may switch away.
I've never paid very close attention to the time of EFTs and payroll deposits just thinking they will get there when they get there.
It's usually a plus or minus 24 hours kind of thing which has always been good enough for me.
For those who need the funds ASAP, this is definitely something to be aware of.
I am planning a trip to the US and was looking at the US savings acct - but I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around it.
Once I put money in there, how would I get it out?
Wouldn't I have to transfer it back to my chequings acct and get out Canadian funds?
My main concern is having US cash to spend while on vacation.
Is there some way to use the US account for this that I'm missing?
If not, can someone let me know which would be a better option - buying US cash from a big branch bank while still in canada, or withdrawing US cash from my tangerine chequings acct once in the states using a Bank of America machine.
Just finished a 3 month trip article source USA.
There is no doubt that Tangerine has lower Foreign Exchange Fees than big banks but still not as good as using a Sears MasterCard from Chase Canada bank since they charge no FEF's.
The card are accepted everywhere.
When I did a comparison a few times between the rate I was getting with MC vs.
I buy USD online from my CDN savings both with Tangerine.
Where do go here go to buy your USD online?
Do you buy it directly from Tangerine or through a 3rd party.
I find there are 3rd parties that will usually give better rates than all the banks.
I'm going to write an article on that eventually.
I just found out that the Sears MasterCard has no exchange fees the other day.
I already knew of 2 other credit cards that offer the same I think they are both this web page Chase as well.
I will write an article on that too.
Thanks for all the help you are giving other commenters!
With PC, you can arrange as many pre-authorized debit PAD as you wish.
Tangerine handicaps you with maximum of three such arrangements.
Imagine the ability to move funds Canadian or US Dollar from any financial institution to any other financial institution just by routing it through PC.
With any interest rate promotions, PC will credit you with regular interest only, at month end, throughout the promotion.
Bonus interest is paid at the end of the promotion, after a week or ten days.
Tangerine will pay you regular interest on the last business day of the month, and bonus interest on the first business day of the next month just one day apart.
PC is akin to tax withholding at source, and then a fat refund when you file your yearly tax return!!
If you have substantial funds PC can be negotiated with for better terms.
Tangerine may be able to do money in the bank wwe rey mysterio same with its Scotia buyout.
But seems like its a difference in culture between the two.
Establishing a pre-authorized debit is much more elaborate procedure with PC requiring a void cheque in one form or another.
Tangerine, on the other hand can do it in a day and a-half, just by putting some small funds into your other institution account, two times and have you verify their order of deposit and the amounts usually under 25 cents each.
Sounds like you can shuffle them if you need to though because it only takes 1.
Feels so much more rewarding with Tangerine to see that bonus interest pile in every month.
Glad to hear they are finally making it a little bit easier now.
Kind of hard to share other sources this way.
If the ATM in another country is part of the Global ATM Alliance, there's zero fees or currency exchange on Tangerine's side.
However the ATM provider may charge a currency exchange fee.
Typically its low because in many cases they expect that your ATM and bank will also be charging a similar fee.
Unfortunately I'm travelling to Japan again and there are no Global ATM Alliance ATMs in Japan that I've found.
In the past I just used my PC Financial debit card sparingly at Citibank ATMs.
It worked fine and there was one in my office's lobby.
BUT I don't have to pay any Tangerine currency exchange fee, which it typically 2.
The key is to withdraw infrequent and large when you do to avoid reoccurring fixed fees.
Sorry you had trouble posting links.
I don't expressively forbid it, as it definitely works sometimes but it depends on the how the spam algorithm analyzes the content being posted.
I have to set the spam filter to be aggressive because of the go here of spam I receive.
One time I disabled the spam filter by mistake I thought it was broken actually and the spam literally came in faster than I could delete it and I was deleting them 50 at a time!
I am very disappointed in the rates recently.
For example they have dropped the Savings Account and TFSA down to 1.
Oaken Financial, for example offers 1.
They have introduced a charge to transfer funds from a TFSA.
I used to be able to convert from Canadian to US funds for about 1.
Since the takeover, they have gradually made Tangerine similar to other big banks.
I am preparing to relocate al my accounts.
I wouldn't be surprised to see smaller players like Oaken drop their rates some too.
That isn't to say that there are higher rates to be found than Tangerine, but I don't know if this rate adjustment is related to the Scotiabank takeover.
I'm still happy with Tangerine for now but thanks for your input.
It's definitely interesting to see how they change things going forward now that they are owned by Scotia.
I will deregister my TFSA in late December and transfer all the money to Oaken in January.
This way I avoid their transfer charge which they said they would never do and did not provide warning and not have to suffer through the delay others have complained about.
Your continuing support of this institution is unfounded by my experience.
No monthly fees, very easy to use, transfer money, link external accounts, and deposit cheques via their app + the camera on your smartphone.
I just graduated university so I joined to get away from RBC's pesky monthly fees as RBC has switched to a fee-based account from a previously free student account.
Smart move for recent graduates.
Recently tried to move funds out to another Bank, Linked to Tangerine and received message to call them as I had exceeded my daily limit!!
There was NO daily limit when first transferring in?
I know for sure when I call I will be on hold for ever, based on others experience with same.
Recently the Bank of Canada made an interest reduction.
Tangerine went well beyond this in lowering their savings account rate!!!
Trying to move money out and received message to call them as I exceeded my daily limit?
Again after one week when I deposited money that I received through interac transfer email ,money was deposited but account was locked without informing me.
And they told me this only after one month when I tried to transfer fund in to the account.
I called and after 25 min of waiting, explained the situation but she couldnt resolve and transferred the call to Specialist!
Another 15 min waiting and he couldnt resolve either.
He asked me a reason and document to justify the money I got through the interac transfer!!!
It was amount less than 1500.
I gave all info and then instesd of resolving the issue he transferred me to Security where I could only leave a message to MACHINE saying they can get back to me within 24 to 48 hours solely at their convenience.
I tried to call them again and this time after waiting of 28 min, I gave up as it was already very late in evening.
Only good part - I didnt need to trasnfer the money OUT otherwise I had stuck atleast for 4 days without money.
If you have been a customer for awhile and you expect to exceed your daily limits on a regular basis, I would suggest asking them to increase your limits.
As long as you have been a good customer for a while, they would probably agree to do so.
Really don't wanna pay the big bank xchange rates.
I don't think you are going to save any significant money going through them over another bank.
There are ways to save money on currency exchange but you have to involve 3rd party companies or negotiate lower rates with the banks if you are transferring a large sum of money.
You can only view and act on your chequeing account.
With online banking so accessible these days even on your phonenot much of an issue.
But it still would be nice to access that info from the ATM.
I have been happy with PC Financial for the most part and agree that their new website and mobile app bring them on par to the big 5 banks.
I was one of the chosen who got to apply and 'test drive' the new Tangerine credit card back in the fall and agree that it is the best NO-FEE money back card out there.
I also have the MBNA Smart Cash World MasterCard and the now grandfathered Capital One World Aspire Cash MasterCard.
PC's new website and mobile app look nicer, but I find that Tangerine's website gives you more flexibility example : changing your debit card limits and being able to add external accounts without having to send in cheques.
Some additional comments on where PC Financial is better than Tangerine in my opinion: - PC offers an Interac Flash debit card while Tangerine says they may have an Interac Flash debit card coming soon according to their customer service departmentbut it is still unconfirmed.
TD Canada Trust is up there too with ATM's, but they of course don't offer a virtual bank option.
I agree that with Tangerine you can move money and pay bills online or through the mobile app, but it ends up being a two-step process with Tangerine by first depositing the money assuming it it cash and not a cheque and then going online to do the rest of your banking.
With PC, you can do many things online at the actual bank machine itself.
A great article and thanks for your dedication to keeping your followers informed.
I learned a few things that I didn't know about previously, especially the flexibility of the PC ATMs.
I prefer to do most of my transactions through online banking, not at the ATM, so I never really explored or compared those options.
If you think PC Financial's website wasn't that great before the recent update, you should see RBCs interface.
It still looks the same as it must have in the 90s.
They have recently put a little lipstick on it, but you can tell it is still the same ugly beast underneath.
I do love the new PC Financial look and functionality though.
In regards to the TangerineMoney-Back MasterCard, I do think it is the best no-fee card for earning the most cash back, but I still think the MBNA Smart Cash World MasterCard is slightly better overall because it has a lot of insurance coverage and perks that the Tangerine card doesn't offer.
But avoids doing so because the beneficiary must first provide proof of claim which they can't do because Tangerine doesn't inform them that they are a beneficiary nor provides them with the claim form to submit.
Conceivably Tangerine has kept millions, if not billions, that was rightfully owed to beneficiaries.
As long as that beneficiary contacts them, how can they say "no you can't have the money you were promised to receive on this person's death".
I did go read the rip-off report that it appears you yourself wrote.
Your story does sound frustrating, but it also sounds like they will give you the money if you go through the process they want you to.
If you are unwilling to furnish what they want the will - I agree I'm not sure why they need it in this casethen you should contact a lawyer to get it straightened out.
Also, if you want to post your key on my site you are more than welcome, I created a "Post your key here" section.
I come from country where my english is not too good, so please excuse bad grammar.
We want to use a no fee free online chequing account like Tangerine or PC Financial but when we go to open, we find that they want things like social insurance number.
They also want to copy identifications.
And we are new to canada so do not have such things yet.
Also we are deaf so will not be getting a phone number, so the requirement to have a phone number is against accessibility law we are told.
And also we come from country where you can not even trust police and government so we OK with someone looking at identifications to see, but not to copy and send away.
They explain that because the no fee chequing account pay interest a social insurance number is required by law.
But we not needing things like interest, no overdraft protection, no credit, no interest.
We just want automated teller card and Interac eTransfer use, and a way to deposit cheques and direct deposit government assistance funds and stuff.
Maybe later we use things like mortgage and other accounts that need more info, but not to start.
So who has it so that we do not have to provide social insurance number and not identifications but still get basic account with no extras?
Do this by making it so that there is no overdraft protection, no credit available, not credit card, no points, no interest earned, no nothing.
Make it a no fee online accountthat acts like a cash account only, or a cash prepaid account or cash prepaid credit card so that people can still use eTransfer and auto bank machine, but only if they have cash in account, but no minimum balance.
This also be good for children that not have social insurance number and no car license or identifications yet.
This should be available to anyone who wants it - a no requirements account.
Then later if we get the identifications and numbers then account can be upgraded to other things.
Do you know where to get a no ID no social insuracen number fee free online account that can do etransfer as listed above?
It may exist - but I have never heard of anything like that.
You could check with credit unions in your area and explain your situation to them.
Summary: Stephen, you and others?
The long version: Although I had been ware of Tangerine before reading here about it, I decided to sign up.
For me, the no fees was not a benefit as I already had no fees and iirc everything Tangerine offered, but I wanted a 'second opinion' banking option.
I asked questions that were not answered on the Tangerine website nor FAQ, and I asked the same questions repeatedly of various staff.
I listened for consistency from the different staff and for quality answers.
I was pleased that everyone was answering with the same answers and sounded knowledgeable and when they didn't have the answer, they put me on hold and found out, rather read more just guessing an answer or telling me to go look on their website.
I was primarily asking about linked bank account transfers, and the signup process - what was needed, the procedure, etc.
So I decided to open an online only Tangerine DICA daily interest chequing account.
I used Stephen's howtosavemoeny.
This seems to be to verify an applicant's ID, but again, Tangerine is not indicating unless in very fine unobtainable print somewhere that they are doing that, so an applicant could be quite surprised that happens and because an applicant may be unaware, such private info could be exposed.
Tangerine should should have these posted in advance.
So an applicant can know which 3 they want to use and what their answers will be.
Although an applicant may choose to use correct answers, an applicant may also want to use other answers to prevent meta data mining and to increase the applicant's security.
This is good, but please have them listed so an applicant can peruse them in advance to find a meaningful one, rather than suddenly feeling pressure to decide.
I used the option of sending in a cheque from another bank to verify ID, then waited the 7 calendar days for Tangerine to verify the deposit, then indicate the account was active and fully setup.
Just share your Orange Key with friends and family.
Thanks, we'll be with you shortly.
Tangerine is serious about protecting your personal and financial information.
Alaha here from Tangerine.
How can I help you?
Our Associate, Alaha, is ready to chat with you.
How do you fix this?
Is this chat TLS 1.
If not, I would not want to type in private info.
Alaha, Yes, this is secure chat and your information is kept confidential.
You, Correct Alaha, Since an Orange Key Code has already been applied to your Account, the system will not allow me to change it.
You, So, are you saying that although the Tangerine system has an error, it can not be corrected?
Just share your Orange Key with friends and family.
If Tangerine is going back on its 'award winning customer service' and now saying that it, then Tangerine is false advertising.
Alaha, Let me see if there's anything I can do for you, please bear with me for a moment.
You, That key belongs to Stephen Weyman.
In fact, according to deposit bank draft tangerine blog, you, Tangerine offered him that 'named key' to use.
Alaha, Okay, one moment please.
Thanks for your patience.
You, How is it an incorrect code?
It is listed here: and also indicates: "Hi Stephen, I was just wondering, how did you get a custom "More25" Orange Key?
You, Thank you for fixing this, but your wording of "an incorrect code" implies that I am somehow at fault, and that is the same as saying I am lying, so that is offensive.
Before opening an account, I called in to Tangerine and asked if that More25 was OK to use for that bonus, and was told yes it is, so then Tangerine needs to get its act together and fix this.
Prove to me by showing me where is indicates that More25 is a general code?
Alaha, I apologize for the inconvenience and any frustration this may have caused.
Alaha, It was not my intention to offend you in any way.
We have various Orange Keys that we offer through out the year and new Clients are welcome to use them.
Different Orange Keys awards different Bonuses.
I will definitely log your feedback and forward it to the appropriate department for further review.
You, Nowhere does the Tangerine website indicate that only 'some' orange keys will give the double bonus - that link does not indicate any limitations.
How is one to know otherwise?
Further, during the applications process, when one enters the Orange key, the site even showed the bonus.
The site obviously needs improvement.
Alaha, I can add this information to the feedback as well and hopefully in the near future we will be able to make these changes.
Again, I apologize for the inconvenience.
Did you have any other questions for today?
Just share your Orange Key with friends and family.
You, I did read somewhere, but did not find on the Tangerine site, therefore I am not taking it as official, that this double bonus was extended?
Since the website is already in error about the keys that can be used, maybe it is just not updated yet?
Alaha, Correct, each Client has an Orange Key associated with their Account.
The double Bonus for 'Refer a Friend' promotion is until January 31st, 2017.
You, So that is confirmation that "More25" is OK to use - Tangerine offered it to Stephen.
Alaha, He won't be receiving any Bonuses with the promotion code 'More25', you have received the Bonus.
You, OK, he will be notified as Tangerine has misinformed him then.
Jessica here from Tangerine.
How can I help you?
Our Associate, Jessica, is ready to chat with you.
You, Hello - for the double bonus here: what is the time limit on that?
Or does it mean the new client signing up also has to have made a deposit by Jan 31?
Thank you Jessica, I am happy to tell you that our refer a friend double bonus offer has been extended to April 30th, 2017.
In order to qualify for the double bonus, your friend must sign up by April 30th with an orange key.
Therefore, they can either send the cheque by mail, deposit it at an ABM, deposit it with our mobile application or accept an email money transfer.
Jessica, Not a problem.
Thank you for chatting with us and have a great day!
Exit chat ------------------------------- Then via email.
Or does it mean the new client signing up also has to have made a deposit by Jan 31?
The "Refer a friend" promotion has been extended to April 30, 2017, so you will have lots of time to set up your account with us!
Stephen - we'd be interested in your outcome of investigating this and how much you have been shorted.
Also suggest you remove the 'More25' and post your acutal key so you do get the referral bonus.
There is a limit on the amount of referral bonuses any one person can get and when you run a website like mine you can't really use a personal referral code forever.
I am now part of the Tangerine affiliate program roughly the same payout and when you are part of the program you have to use the generic Orange Keys that they give you.
One of the first things I told them was that I wanted my readers to have the same offer available to them as somebody who was being referred by a non-generic Orange Key.
Most of the time the offer is the same or better than was is available on the Tangerine home page or through Orange Key referral, but sometimes they have referral promotions where the offer isn't as good.
That's unfortunately what is happening right now.
I will forward this lengthy comment to them in an effort to again convince them to put their best offer on their generic codes.
It is not secured.
It is using servers in the USA, rather than Canada as they mislead users into thinking they are secured in Canada.
When your data is located on USA soil the USA Patriot Act and Homeland Security Act prevail and the USA has the right to inspect, decrypt, etc your info.
I thought they were a bank, guess not.
I have a need for at Thrive chequing accounts: 1 only in my name, the other 3 each in my name with a second account holder.
Forces me to open chequing accounts with other banks, I can't consolidate all my banking needs with just one bank Tangerinereally sucks.
Got fed up with CIBC.
My chequing account card which never left my wallet got hacked!
From someone from Brazil!
Haven't even set foot in there!
Don't trust big banks anymore.
I had a couple of deposits from e-transfers and they decided to hold it for what they called variance of information.
Once I called and had to talk to 3 people they released the money previous to the e-transfers.
Money transferred to me from friends for other legitimate banking institutions.
No red flags should have come up.
Their security department was increasingly useless and could give me no real reason for this hold and even after a month they still hold it.
In fact they even told me they didn't have to be nice to me since they are not customer service.
I would never recommend this company to hold on to my dirty dishes never mind money.
This new era of full digital banks like Tangerine has more authority and can do as they please with your money.
At this stage the bank i use the term loosely is telling they can keep my money till the end of May 2018 then they have to release it.
If your thinking about banking with them run away screaming as they will exploit your money for there ends but they are not really there for you.
I knew about this bank but I already have account in Quinte First.
It really good to know that there is no monthly account fees and unlimited free cheques.
It save a lot yearly for sure specially when you have lots of transactions going on.
I am about to renew my mortgage and little confuse with the rates as well.
Do I deposit bank draft tangerine to talk to some agent to get better idea to save some more penny or talk directly to bank?
Well I know about Rhonda Schmidthope she is good.
Can anyone give me suggestion on this?

Your bank may choose to mail the cheque back to the financial institution that issued it and have it replaced by a secured method of payment, such as a bank draft or a cashier's cheque. It would then need to wait for that institution to mail the bank draft or cashier's cheque back. Access to the first $100 for consumers

I opened a chequing account as I was travelling and Tangerine promised lower ATM fees abroad. I opened the account in person at a kiosk. I confirmed my plan to withdraw money overseas. I opened the account with two pieces of ID including a driver's license and credit card. Once overseas, I was able to deposit money into the account.

I like to keep zero dollar balances in accounts and I move money all over the place to try and get the best interest rate.
The trick to avoid this is simply to EMAIL THE MONEY TO YOURSELF.
Solution: You have an account at a standard bank like TD Bank, and you have a LINE OF CREDIT you can draw upon who trust bank mobile deposit app what the interest rate isand use the money, then pay it off with a cheque from your online bank.
I go to TD Bank.

We deposit bank draft tangerine shocked at how RBC and Other banks were charging ridiculous amounts for basic banking services.
If we needed cash, we would write a check but had to wait a week or so for it to get cashed from USD to CAD.
It takes two weeks to get a check cashed and converted from CAD into USD when deposited into a US bank account.
This turned out to be cheaper than using a regular wire transfer.
When we bought our car we ended up maxing both our debit cards out then topping up with everything in our pockets.

Debating whether to e-deposit that cheque on your smartphone?
While cheques may be going the way of the dodo, they are not yet out of the here system in Canada.
Birthday presents, baby-sitting money and post-dated rent cheques are still part of the regular money cycle.
As a busy small business owner, I had migrated most of my banking functions first to online and then to my mobile phone.
But cheque deposit was that one function that ensured I had a regular date with the ATM or Bank Teller, rain, shine or.
When the Canadian banking system could finally offer eDeposit capability, I could not wait to take advantage of it.
Questions on the timelines to bring eDeposit to Canada, a deposit bank draft tangerine review of eDeposit at the various Canadian banks, the use of eDeposit for small business and the use of eDeposit in some other countries?
Watch for upcoming posts.
Each bank has a plethora of information deposit bank draft tangerine some very clever YouTube videos on how to use their app to deposit your cheque sort bank stanbic code ibtc if you wish to compare them, here are some comments and suggestions based on personal experience.
Before doing my test I downloaded the most current version of the app for each bank.
I then eDeposited the cheque s at the same time of day under the same lighting conditions.
WHICH BANK OFFERS THE BEST USER EXPERIENCE?
Select account from dropdown and enter amount.
Option to enter a memo 2.

Enter the amount of the cheque and select the money notes of england bank 3.
There are no daily, weekly or monthly limits associated with your deposit.
If your deposit exceeds the limit, the application will alert you before your deposit is completed and you can then deposit those items at a branch or at a bank machine.
Subject to your regular hold policy.
Funds deposited before midnight are credited pending settlement to your account same day.
No limits on the number of cheques that can be deposited within daily, weekly and monthly deposit amount limits.
Camera Used the technology within the camera to take the photos.
Tried 4 times to get a clear copy.
The auto focus kept taking blurred shots Auto-focused the photo.
Mitek technology — BRILLIANT.
You will also receive one email to let you know that the cheque was received for processing.
A few days later you will receive a second email to confirm that the cheque cleared and asking you to shred the cheque.
Tangerine has done the most important things right — they have made the process EASY.
As this shows, that was very consciously by design.
The use of the technology means that I do not have the onerous experience of repeatedly re-taking the photograph of both sides of my cheque.
TD and CIBC offer a number of additional features such as the Mobile Deposit History and the on-screen help functionality.
But the experience is BEST with Tangerine.
WHEN THINGS GO WRONG I have used eDeposit on each of these apps in the past, without issue.
This time I ended up testing the error handling for each app without intending to.
I had voted Tangerine at providing the best experience for depositing a cheque via a mobile app.
However, when things do not go to plan, the other banks begin to show their value.
It brought to mind a conversation I had with my local TD branch manager — you get what you pay for.
WHEN THINGS GO WRONG TD CIBC Tangerine The problem The newest version of the app v7.
I would process all the deposit screens, but kept getting the message.
Repeated attempts to re-deposit the cheque approximately 5 each day for 4 days visit web page returning the same error screen.
Obviously, TD could not have been down that long.
So I called the Contact Us section of the app to call through to Technical Help.
The cheque was written on an account that was closed.
The cheque I deposited was written on an account that was closed.
When that did not solve the problem, they submitted an escalation ticket.
CIBC Handled the issue logically.
The app showed the RETURNED CHQ on my account but no explanation.
Further investigation using CIBC online showed the actual cheque with a description of what caused the error.
There was no need to call Customer Support.
The Tangerine app Account History showed a same day dated Reversal of Cheque-In Deposit.
There was no reversal and no memos in the More section of the app.
There was no explanation in the app and non online.
A call to Customer Support brought to light that the cheque was being returned as it was written on a closed account.
But it was being returned via snail mail.
As of posting I still have not received the notification.
Suggestions for improvement It is clear that the FAQ and Technical Help Desk are not aware of the root cause of this issue.
They had received a few calls reporting the deposit bank draft tangerine problem.
I debugged this issue after click here a thread on the.
Could save time with better error processing on screen.
Change the script at Help Desk.
Suggest the removal of special characters from the memofield2.
Switch to mobile data instead of WiFi and retry.
Delete, then reload the app.
Suggestion would be to include a memo on the Returned item in case I am travelling and have no access to the desktop.
While Tangerine was in the right to undo the transaction, I was not kept in the loop in a timely fashion — and had to call to figure out what was happening.
More disturbing was that the Cheque-In Deposit processed email confirmed that EVERYTHING WAS OKI suggest adding a memo item to the online or app screen in case deposits are returned SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT TD: What TD does right Suggestions for improvement + The deposit button is easy to locate+ They have the most complete FAQ on their website, but it still did not offer suggestions on hitting technical issues+ The updated available deposit limits Daily and 30-day are clearly shown on the Deposit Cheque screen+ There are clear Next Steps detailed at the bottom of the confirmation screen+ The Mobile Deposit History screen listing all mobile deposits made in the past 30 days is clearly available in the app++ Your mobile deposit receipts are available for 6 months in the inbox of your TD EasyWeb Online Banking.
Suggest that the caller use Mobile Data and remove special characters, before asking the caller to delete and then reload the app CIBC: What CIBC does right What will deposit bank draft tangerine them to best?
The entire photographing phase was comparatively painless.
The second on June 15 let me know that it had been processed and that I could shred the paper cheque.
Normally a great process + Keep it simple — fast easy steps, less messing around — Error handling is sub-par.
I should not have to wait for snail mail which I have yet to receive to find out that an eDeposit cheque has bounced.
Have you used deposited your cheques via your mobile app?
Care to share your experience?
Are you concerned about security with the apps?
Hi Karena, I just read this blog, I really liked the comparison tables, especially — when things go wrong.
I found CIBC is always a bit pricier, but most often has great customer service.
I am shopping for a business account, any blogs by you on this topic?

Last Updated on May 1, 2019 Since being acquired by Scotiabank in 2012, Tangerine bank has quickly become one of the best online banks in Canada.
Tangerine MasterCard Blows Away the Competition Tangerine has succeeded in making a big splash with their popular no-fee.
Check out our full review for more information.
With the latter choice, users get a bonus third spend category at 2%—and users can change their categories whenever they want.
All other purchases earn 0.
Another major bonus: Tangerine has an incredible, limited time welcome offer.
As of April 22, 2019, new Tangerine Credit Card Account holders can earn 4% Money-Back Rewards on purchases in up to three Money-Back Categories of their choice, for the first three months.
At Young and Thrifty, we love the simplicity and flexibility of this rewards program and how it can be customized to suit your needs.
For one, Tangerine often throws out some great promotional offers, like a for the first six months for new clients.
Tangerine Online Banking is Convenient and Easy Since the get-go, Tangerine has truly been a leader in providing innovative online banking services to customers.
No line-ups or listening to annoying elevator music while on hold on the phone.
Tangerine was one of the first Canadian companies to embrace this method of online banking.
Instead, you can do all your banking from the comfort of your home or office.
Using a computer, tablet or smartphone, you can manage your Tangerine accounts with a click of a button.
You can review and categorize transactions, transfer and email funds, deposit cheques, or chat with a Tangerine Associates — all through your device.
Their mobile app is also excellent and has challenged the competition to catch up over the last couple of years.
As far as banks go, Tangerine gets top marks for products and fees; communications and advice; account opening, and channel activities online and mobile.
If you're applying for a mortgage, you can even do the entire application online.
No Fees Tangerine has made its name for offering no-fee chequing and savings accounts with high-interest rates.
They also offer low-fee, diversified investments for those clients with long-term financial goals.
One caveat: there are some.
Tangerine Bank Review Summary Summary Offering no-fee chequing and savings accounts, outstanding customer service, innovative banking technology, and competitive interest rates, Tangerine gets our top spot as the best online bank in Canada.
The no-fee Tangerine MasterCard with 2% cash-back on eligible purchases is also a winner, sweetening the deal for new and current Tangerine clients.
When she's not writing from her home office, she's busy globe-trotting to new destinations in search of her next story.
The limited ATM really sucks though.
If they continue to bring new useful features like they did with scanning cheques for deposit, they should be able to win over many new customers.
Why bother with this whole charade if Scotia planned to do what RBC did bank in the logo money Ally?
The ATM integration is huge and a top-end cash back credit card would bolster that niche, which seems to have been left in the dust in the recent travel rewards card race.
For that reason, I think it makes sense for them to keep things separate and use the two banks to service two completely different customer segments.
There may be only a few actual ING machines, but many many more you can use for free.
Their deposits were just a drop in the bucket and not worth the trouble of keeping around.
ING, on the other hand, has a strong foothold in banking and deposits.
My main bank is TD but I live on Commercial Drive in Vancouver where TD has no presence.
My closest ATM is Vancity but they have no fee-free accounts.
Hence I wanted a card I could use with Exchange network ATMs which are plentiful in this city.
They they announced their closure.
So I gave up on them and will be closing the account.
Their Android app works pretty well so if I withdraw the last few dollars from my card I can initiate a new transfer right from my phone.
The Scotiabank network will be a big advantage here.
But there will be the Scotia network.
No sense in keeping both I suppose.
They might think no one is noticing but I am.
I have also noticed that Meridian is getting a little competitive with investment interest rates.
Makes no difference to me which building my cash is sitting in.
Since Scotia got its hands on ING, service has dropped consistently.
Tangarine does have some great options and the phone app.
I have to say they did well.
The initial savings rate I got was 2.
YOU NEED TO DEPOSIT INTO THE CHEQUING THEN TRANSFER INTO THE SAVINGS FROM ATMS.
You can transfer from you outside bank or use the phone app to scan a cheque right into savings but if you want to atm cash in u need that crucial chequing account.
I had a variable rate mortgage with ING direct.
Through a mortgage broker, I got a good rate.
Now I purchased a new house.
First, I asked to continue the good rate i had to the new house, the rep refused to offer any better rate than the standard they have which is prime.
They donot offer any advise or options to you.
For example, they register the full value of the house as collateral for the mortgage deposit bank bonus code bingo the no break though you only borrow a small portion.
Despite the whole process started two months ago, the worst was that it took them several rounds to issue the right mortgage paper to me and to my lawyer.
Then right at 4:50pm of the last business day before closuing, they issued an amendment with erronous rates.
At this moment I am holding my breath waiting for them to send the correct mortgage commitment letter to my lawyer on the CLOSING day so that I can close my purchase.
I had to push them several times to get them to use the standard way other banks use in this situation.
The advise, avoid Tangerine Bank at all costs.
Thanks for the feedback.
I will say that I really bad experiences with a Big 6 bank when it came to mortgages as well.
You know where I had a really pleasant experience?
My local credit union!
I can definitely empathize with your bank not coming through for you in a high stress situation like that.
I like the no-fee option, but I need to be able to actually access the account with a card.
Now that Scotia Bank has taken over the call wait times are your typical nightmare.
I have had ING bank for many years and I also deal with PC.
I recently was making a large transfer of money from Tangerine to my PC account.
Just before I finalized the transaction, on the last screen, a notice came up asking me if I wanted to instead, put the money into a Tangerine 1 year GIC at 2%, rather than transfer it out.
It seems if you try to move money from them to another financial institution, they CAN offer you a better interest rate.
There is a maximun limit that you can transfer — each day with Tangerine so check that out first.
Yesterday after making a deposit using their app I was informed with my now signed cheque the they will no longer accept it or allow it to be re-deposited This is an instant nightmare for me.
No warning, no time to prepare and to not even let me deposit my signed cheque!
Tangerine has virtually stopped me from banking at tangerine!
Looks like the folks behind orange have some work to do.
Very hard to deal with and claim laws exist when they do not and they want you to close account in order to deal with the account.
RATING this bank below ZERO.
I had an RBC leo account from the age of 2 or 3 and on my 18th birthday without warning I found a massive withdrawal for service charges to switch me over to a regular adult account.
Needless to say, that I closed that account and took my money elsewhere.
I opened a PC financial account later that deposit bank draft tangerine and it was great- at first.
I was a responsible banker, no funny business, no overdraft- EVER.
Plus PC financial would never make ANY exceptions when I called in emergencies.
SO I ditched PC financial and went to CIBC.
Same old bull… only difference was that instead of paying a yearly fee I paid a lot for cheques, debit or atm uses were limited… and their customer service is shoddy.
SO in 2005, I finally switched to ING.
No fees, free cheques and customer service that was willing to help.
One year after opening my account, I was hospitalized and they kindly released extra money for me to buy medication as it coincided with the same day rent was due.
I never even asked, but thanks!
It really did help.
By 2009 I was sent another notification that due to my excellent banking history, and as a valued customer, my limit was raised again.
I have yet to find a prospective user to share my orange key with, but the idea of the BANK giving away money for free to two people, one for setting up a new account theme, banking slot machines join the other for just sharing their information, well….
World banking made easy and cheap!
I have been saving with ING for over 10 years and switched to their checking account as soon as it was offered.
I never had a single problem with ING Bank of Canada, but I have had a few with Tangerine in just the past month and a half.
These include worse customer service and numerous technical problems.
I just applied for a PC Financial account slot machine bank ebay and savings.
At a glance they seem to offer everything that Tangerine does right down to the app that you can use to deposit cheques and their locations are more convenient to me.
Their interest rates have also dropped substantially since it became Tangerine.
Now the best I see there is 1.
They charge extra money for nothing and to send money is ridicules cause you can only send 3000.
I will be leaving Scotia Bank, love the scene points but hate the bank!!!!!
See fine print at the bottom of this page: Lesson being, if you want to open a registered savings account, do it elsewhere.
Prior to that date their savings accounts were cashable at a reduced interest rate which really gave you an edge in case rates were to skyrocket or you needed to get to your money sooner for an emergency.
And today Jan 26 2015, I noticed that after the bank of Canada lowered their rates by.
My credit union now gives me a better rate than Tangerine!!
I also saw BMO does it.
I am with Scotia now, and wanted to start investing with Tangerine, but since Scotia bought it I am nervous, like link it even worth it?
I assume that to withdraw that money in cash is free, no?
I wanted to start investing with Tangerine but I already have a Scotia, so I am uncertain I should.
Although the Tangerine MERs are very competitive.
I wish I was ready to start investing without a bank-mediated portfolio.
Nevertheless, now that I have both a click and savings account open, things seem okay so far.
The accounts are still relatively new, though, so time will tell.
I was sick and tired of my bank charging me a fee to have unlimited access to MY money.
I had had enough.
As a young professional, Tangerine is perfect for me.
To date I have never had an issue with them.
I welcomed the change to Scotia because for me it was the opposite, I had to drive out of my town to access an ABM on The Exchange Network.
That kind of sucked but they were also not normal transactions for me that would happen regularly.
I will probably switch to somewhere else so all my banking is in one place.
With RBC though if I have a particularly large cheque like from selling a carI can come into a branch and maybe sweet talk them into not placing any holds on it.
I wonder if that would work with a Tangerine cafe.
Here are a couple of examples.
Rates for savings deposits is now 1.
As mentioned by others, they are now charging a fee to transfer funds out of the TFSA.
Want to change to other forms of investment with-in this tax free account that gives a higher return.
What do you suggest?
I loved this bank when it was ING.
The agent even documented the file stating such!
I spoke so highly for this company and only had good things to say.
Now I want to cancel and tell the people I referred to cancel too.
The supervisor even stated as a customer you are right.
We could use any ATM on the Exchange network.
So any credit union, HSBC, Vanc City machines worked.
There were far more options than there is now.
I found out the hard way that it was changed when I moved to a small town with no Scotia Bank.
I was no longer able to deposit pay cheques ANYWHERE without driving three hours to Calgary.
I had to open a local credit union account.
HSBC and National Bank ATM machines are no longer available.
They were convenient for me a long time.
Granted ScotiaBank ATM are now available please click for source not the ones in Shell Gas station for reason I do not know.
I am looking for an alternative, if anyone has one.
I have never been spoken to that way by any bank — sounds like they hired thugs from a collection agency, anyways, never again.
Back to brick and mortar and real people for me thanks.
A good manager would have resolved this in 5 seconds.
AT WHAT MENTALITY LEVEL DO YOU REALLY THINK THESE ADDS APPEAL TOO.
THERE IS NOT ONE SHRED OF IMPORTANT INFORMATION GIVEN IN THESE ADS TO HELP ONE MAKE AN INTELLIGENT DECISION REGARDING BANKING WITH YOUR COMPANY.
May 19, 2015 I just opened and Oaken account because their rates are so much better than everybody else, so I was planning to tranfer some of my money.
I had my first experience with a snarky Tangerine customer service rep today.
Time to change online banks!
A major criticism of Tangerine is that they promise to move money into or out of your account using EFTs in two business days.
As I said earlier, we have had a long relationship with ING and then Tangerine.
Service with Tangerine is not satisfactory.
I will be investigating alternate deposit bank draft tangerine banking and credit unions, and withdrawing all our funds from Tangerine.
They are worse than the big banks because they promise 1 or 2 day electronic funds transfers to and from your other bank, but actually hold the money far longer.
I also note that they are implementing fees for some services, and this is a complete contradiction to the no-fee policy they promised to continue from ING.
We have cleared all our accounts out of Tangerine today.
Our advice is to stay clear of Tangerine, they are a big bank pretending to be a no-fee online institution.
The Scotiabank machines are hard to find and often poorly serviced ie no envelopes.
The Exchange network was far superior with most credit unions large and smallHSBC and National Bank part of the system.
You could balances on the Exchange network and denominations slot bank break the again free than twenties at HSBC machines.
And Scotiabank must have peed off Shell as Shell gave the heave to Scotiabank machines.
It was pretty useless anyhow since most Shell kiosks were locked at 10 pm anyhow.
Sunday was a case in point with how useless Scotiabank is.
First stop with two machines.
One out of service and the other out of cash.
A second stop had the Scotiabank machine locked up behind locked doors in a mall.
Third stop, yippee cash but if you wanted to make a deposit, too bad!!!
No monthly fees, very easy to use, transfer money, link external accounts, and deposit cheques via their app + the camera on your smartphone.
Smart move for recent graduates.
Since being taken over by Scotiabank, there has been subtle and not so subtle changes.
The latest change is with overdraft protection.
I only ended up being overdrawn once with ING when a preauthorized debit for an insurance company took money out despite the policy not having been renewed.
This week I kept getting emails about forthcoming overdraft changes with bits of information at a time until finally, the kicker.
Yes Penalties and Overdraft Fees have arrived at Tangerine making it appear exactly like a big Canadian bank at its best; gouging the consumer at every opportunity in the name of profit.
The continuing process of nickeling and diming customers is on a roll with the latest being for overdraft protection.
Although I am reimbursed the withdrawl amount, I end up stuck with the overdraft fee for which I was not penalized for with ING.
Quite simply, government regulators ensure Canadian banks are amongst the strongest in the world with a goal of all being 1.
Rest assured as Canadians, if it seems to good to be true, it will come to an end.
Remember Montreal Trust, Canada Trust, Royal Trust, etc.
They entice you in, then rip you off.
No fee, take a look at the cost if you try and transfer your TFSA.
Also lots of complaints about delay in the process.
I thought it was a great bank until BNS took over.
I am moving everything out.
Employees complain about low pay and lack of opportunity to advance.
All in all, a bad deal.
I recently had a very bad experiences with them.
I used online banking to change my home address which my wife and I just moved in.
Tangerine, at no warning at all, blocked our online banking access because they are not able to verify my address through a third party service namely TransUnion.
Its a dead loop!!!
The website is so so, mind you not bad for online payments.
But long long wait times if you ever have to call in.
If you really want savings of this type of banking, consider it but look to see if there is an alternative available in your province before signing to this once good company under the ING brand.
The sale should never have been allowed in the first place as it has stifled competition in banking in Canada.
In fact, I am in the process of transferring all my funds to a credit union.
I was a long-time customer with ING Direct, opening a savings account and TFS account.
Until Scotiabank bought ING Group and rebranded to Tangerine, I had no qualms with the service.
Tangerine, on the other hand?
They put unreasonable holds on my money when I do an EFT deposit to a linked external account.
The call centre has hung up on me after waiting 20mins on hold…twice.
Their mobile app consistently crashes.
And, their interest rates for savings accounts are much lower than what I enjoyed with ING.
I would also highly recommend staying as far away from Scotiabank as possible and therefore Tangerineespecially for mortgages.
They are notorious for starting foreclosures if you do as much as miss one payment.
My friend is experiencing this right now.
She has the money in her account, and Scotiabank has refused her money.
Her farm and land is now in foreclosure and she has been fighting this for months.
It has gone from a minute to do a transaction to longer and longer times asking dozens of questions then admitting their system is not working properly.
An example: asking me to verify my account because they claim IT IS FIRST TIME I AM CALLING and I have been client for over 10 years.
They claim it is my first large transaction and I read them the dates where I do large transactions almost every month or two.
MUST FIND ALTERNATIVE AND GET MONEY OUT OF THEIR BEFORE THEY STEAL IT AND WHO NEEDS TO GO TO COURT FOR A WITHDRAWL!!!!!!!
To avoid them dragging their feet and charging https://basedgosh.info/bank/money-in-the-bank-is-it-safe.html fee, I transferred my TFSA to my savings account, then transferred it over to Oaken where the interest rates are much better.
By doing it in December I can reinvest in a TFSA in January with no penalty.
There were a couple of trip ropes however.
My first attempt to transfer was blocked as they said I exceeded the transfer limit.
To find out the limit I had to call which meant a wait of over 20 minutes for an answer.
Initially, I had no problem.
As a physically handicapped person, I make use of the cell phone deposit system.
Occasionally, the image is not clear enough and I get an immediate note to re-submit which is no problem.
My last deposit was accepted and I received an email to confirm that the amount was in my account.
My online balance showed this too.
I immediately used some of the funds.
Next day, I received deposit bank draft tangerine email to say that the image was not article source enough and the full amount of the cheque was deducted from my balance.
So this is a warning — stay away from Tangerine!
They are not to be trusted.
I have not had a problem in 15 years!
Now as Tangerine, the call center wait time is slow as hell.
Thanks, all sarcasm fully intended.
I doubt I can trust that electronic payments from Tangerine would be made to Virgin Mobile on time to avoid late fees incurred if they take 2-3 business days to be action.
I am afraid to try.
For these reasons, I think all banks should be sued, and relevant fees reversed to their respective customers.
This is the year 2016.
First of a ll why was I not flagged about this and what kind of bank lets these go unoticed without blocking account and or contacting me as wspeacially this was a new account.
Now been fighting with them back and fortth security department always answering machine they never call back eternal wait on the phone when you call and then the go on on how they want to make your dollar go the distance and how much they give b ack to their cx if they are giving away so much and have no hidden fees how is it even possible for them to make 500 illion profit last quarter alone….
I AM NOW FIGHTING FOR MY REPUTATIONM MY NAME I AM ON SICK LEAVE DUE TO STRESS AND MOST OF IT IS TANGERINES DOING they are crooks.
No fee, 1% cash back on EVERYTHING right from the first dollar spentplus an additional 1% back on your choice of three spending categories I chose groceries, gas, and recurring bills.
By paying the balance off in full each month, the money back is free cash in the bank, baby!!
How sociopathic and corporately convenient!
Even though that cheque stock was designed without blank space to write any date!
To add insult to injury, they forced me into an unplanned 3-night stay from a Friday afternoon in Toronto until a Monday to get that cheque signed.
Toronto Hotels are NOT cheap!
The Staff and even the Tangerine Bank decoration at Yonge and Shuter is false and deceptive.
The menu says says they offer black coffee served in an orange ceramic cup.
Meanwhile, Peter Aceto needs to stop assuming the Canadian Public are uneducated and stupid.
Better yet, read the book, man.
And it seems to be the only useful one of note on my urban landscape.
As a presently low-income Artist on the rise, that could prove useful to me in future.
I was part of their initial chequeing account and credit card launch 2010 and 2015.
I like the option of the overdraft even with the fee and interest rate because you no deposits in bank still use your account.
I just try and watch my balance.
Even if I did.
It beats deposit bank draft tangerine a monthly fee.
Thanks for your time and commitment to consumer rights in Canada.
I called them up and asked after the first few times they stopped working.
The only places they do work is with the Global ATM Alliance network.
What a lousy way to shop, run to the ABM machine, if you can find one, then go shop with a pocketful of cash!!
I signed up a little after they changed their name, because my previous bank was ripping me off with monthly fees.
I accidentally paid the wrong bill.
So I called up their phone support, waited 10 minutes or so, explained what happened and got the problem fixed.
Mine was good, others had bad experiences.
The cons: — Some things on the website are difficult to navigate to, for example: Editing an existing Automatic Savings Program ASP.
It appears Tangerine is going through some growing pains, but still offer a better option than most places?
Saved me hundreds of dollars by NOT charging monthly fees right BMO?
AND paying interest on my money even in Chequing account!
Conceivably Tangerine has kept millions, if not billions, that was rightfully owed to beneficiaries.
Then tangerine is a great option.
I knew i should have switched banks when they switched to tangerine.
I used to LOVE every part of banking with ING.
Now even scotia bank will be lucky if i walk on the same sidewalk as them!
What a traumatizing situation.
Having money and being unable to pay your bills because your bank robbed you mind you, the snarky manager made sure to make it clear, its because they can, and itll still be days.
And it wasnt just the deposit i couldnt get to which would have been understandable it was the ENTIRE account.
With the majority of my cashflow in there.
No money for 8 days now!!!!
Would absolutely not recommend!!
The biggest problem we have had with them besides something similar to what Jolene experienced, but they released the hold on my whole account after calling them is the fact that they hold ALL transfers done through Tangerine online or through the Scotiabank ATM for 5 business days.
I am waiting for money to transfer for the down payment on a house because I used their website like a moron and now have to wait more than a week for the transfer as we just had the long weekend.
I can mail a cheque quicker than that, even with the Canada Post strike!
After almost 4 weeks… they are still taking the money from my OLD account.
So 21st century bank… Hummm.
Tangerine chose to close all accounts.
Terable management at Tangerine and Scotia Bank.
The hold on my own transferred money stuck in cyberspace for days is one of the reasons.
They even put a fancy hold on your savings account if you transfer more than 5000 dollar.
Being Dutch, I loved ING.
Gave Tangerine a chance although I was disappointed by the takeover.
ING was much better than Tangerine for service satisfactory, it is definitely an hassle to deal with it, and if you do, as previously, I would recommend recording your calls.
For mortgages, rates offered and reliable info, Tangerine is no more worth it!
Recently I received an mail that Scotia is going to close my account with no reason.
When I called to their customer care, service was so bad that they did not even listen to me.
This happened multiple times when I received bad note bank deposit from banks in Canada.
Banks have monopoly and government is not able to do anything, they simply suck blood out of common people.
I would recommend anyone not to go to SCOTIA.
I will https://basedgosh.info/bank/lock-it-link-piggy-bank.html more likely to use my Tangerine account.
Tangerine has good rates compare to my primary bank, TD.
For TD I have to keep a minimum in my account to be eligible for a good credit card.
The Tangerine credit card is pretty sweet, and it has no strings attached.
The only downside about Tangerine is that their customer service needs improvement.
I have tried calling them a few times.
They put you on hold and you have the option of getting a call-back, which is nice.
But the deutsche no bank at bonuses is they hung up as soon as you pick up the phone.
It happened more than once and I think the call center did it on purpose in order to meet some quota.
For this reason I stick with TD for dependability.
As to the dropping interest rates since ING have become Tangerine — rates have been dropping all over Canada.
Is this something you looked at?
Are you aware of anyone who tracks this?
My understanding is that JWROS is pretty rare in the online banking world.
For my husband and me, this would be a precondition to considering ANY online bank.
FWIW, this comment is being posted on 1-Dec-2016.
The problem with putting dates on anything is that no one will read anything more than a month old — even though the information is almost always relevant.
Plus, we update these articles on an ongoing basis.
The only fees I think we ever pay are Interac e-transfers and those are pretty standard.
Great for a basic chequing acct to pay the bills!
They are now the sole account holder, and they can dispose of the funds as they like.
If your spouse is the other person on the account my situationyou very much want them to continue to have immediate access to the funds in the event of your death.
Of course, the catch this web page that JWROS relies on trust.
Have you tried negotiating this feature into an account?
I called to learn more here what the best way to do it would be, happy to drive to the Tangerine Cafe or Scotia Bank partner to get a bank draft.
I was told by a manager there is no way to access my money in time to make my deposit, but I could access SOME of it in time by email transferring my daily maximum to myself, and also taking cash out of the machine.
I did exactly that and they immediately locked my account.
I spent hours on the phone trying to get it unlocked, everyone said there was nothing they could do.
What kind of a system is that?
They say it was deposited.
Customer service is absolutely no help as nobody is ever able to do anything.
How can this even happen??
I hope by posting your comment here Tangerine will recognize that this is a problem.
Did you try tweeting at them just out of curiosity?
Wait time on the phone to get to customer service is long.
Its interest for savings is even lower than some other financial institutions.
Spent hours, trying to take some needed money out of my account.
Personally, I hate it.
More time needed to do what was so much easier before!
While the appearance was redesigned…for kids?
Just as well that I am phasing them out as my primary bank account.
As an ING Direct customer I was very happy with the service but have gradually soured on the Tangerine experience.
But here are the reasons 1 terrible interest rates, and absolutely detested the way they only offered their best promotional offers to cetrtain customers,- generally those who had lesser amounts on deposit 2 hated that if you wanted just a middling interest rate 1.
So goodbye tangerineno regrets at leaving.
There are better choices out there and better credit cards.
I like Hubert online credit union, based in Manitoba they also offer a credit card, Eq is also great, though their major drawback is no joint accounts to date.
They hold your money without reason!
They have blocked my account without acceptable reasons.
They put me 35 min on hold to discover the mistake was on their side.
Their only excuse: a computer problem….
My wife was stuck all that time at a cash dispenser with our little children, waiting desesperately that the problem be resolved.
The only reason I use an online bank is for better interest rates.
I pulled out all my money from Tangerine and will only return if they start to offer competitive rates to Manitoba Credit Unions and EQ Bank.
You can tell the Big Bank squeeze-the-customer-attitude has overtaken Tangerine now that Scotia is in charge.
How is it even possible for them to do that when I did not provide my SIN number in the credit card application what they legally need to open a Savings Account in Canada and they have one credit card option which is the one I applied for?
I am ready to cancel my credit card which I am guessing has been created but am hesitant knowing that it will temporarily tarnish my credit.
I do not know how a financial institution can mess up this hard.
Someone tries to rob you.
Your the victim, but Tangerine will close your account and ask Interact to block all your transaction.
Interact and my new Bank told me so.
Really avoid this bank at all cost.
Looks like they have decent rates but I need more info first.
I payed full balance the day before it was due.
What is worse is that I set up automatic payments!!!
The customer service was not helpful or nice.
Also, beware before of money notes england bank for their credit card- they do a hard check that will stay on your file for 6 years!
Now it gets declined whenever I try and buy groceries and gas.
So I called them up.
It took me forever to get a hold of an actual person.
Since when do they cancel your card after missing 1 payment any I try telling them that and the guy actually argued with me and said that is why!
So I asked to talk to the manager.
Waited for approximately an hour just to have the guy come back and say he fixed it https://basedgosh.info/bank/keep-money-in-the-bank.html my card is working now.

I then eDeposited the cheque s at the same time of day under the same lighting conditions.
